Resolutions

Within the next 24 hours we will be happily hugging and wishing "Happy New Year" to friends and strangers alike. Along with this well wishing we also take time to consider our resolutions for the New Year. On my way to work today (yes, I "get" to work on New Years eve day) I was listening to the radio and all the discussion seemed to be about the pending new year and resolutions that people were making. Of course, there are the tried and true "I'll exercise more, I'll eat less, I'll drink less, I'll keep the house clean etc." These are all laudable goals, and actually quite doable by an individual.
The resolution that make me giggle though are those that we have no actual control over. "world peace, end the war, change things in Dar fur" etc. The average man on the street has little control over these issues and though they are very wonderful goals, we have little power as individuals to accomplish them. So, this in mind I started considering my own resolutions for 2008. Yes, eating less would be a wonderful idea. I don't drink much, so that isn't an issue, the house . . . hm mm yes, I could work at keeping that cleaner, but actually I'd like to focus on the exercise part. Now, here is where things get goofy for me. I exercise plenty- but there is an element of my exercise program that I would like to work on. As you may, or may not know, I'm a swimmer of sorts. I usually swim between 4-6 times a week. My minimum workout is 1 mile and I usually average about 1.25 to 1.5 miles, but on occasion get to 2 miles or more. Anyhow, my swim technique is fine EXCEPT I am unable to achieve a decent flip turn! I've tried, but somehow I always just freeze up right before the wall. When I actually do "make" the turn I end up sideways and confused with a bucket of water up my nose. Every day I tell myself, this is the day. I find some other fool in the pool and watch them, if they can do it, I can too. But, alas, even though they seem to complete it without incident, I cannot. So, my resolution for 2008 is to perfect the flip turn.
I have insured the positive outcome of this goal two ways. First, Travis says he will come to the pool with me Thursday to work on this with me. Second, and possibly more effective, I have registered my resolution with the Times Square alliance. If you haven't heard about this, they take these resolutions, put them on pretty colored paper, and will drop them over the revellers at Times Square tonight at the stroke of midnight. If you would like the insure your resolution visit the website at http://www.timessquarenyc.org/ and get busy!
who knows, maybe if Ashley is there she will catch her Mom's resolution- I think that if that were to happen, it would certainly come true.
oh, and so you don't think I'm just a selfish swimmer, I also wished for world peace on my slip of paper. Change starts with one, right?

Well I have complete faith in your ability to complete a flip turn. Remember that time we worked on it at Heather Farms? We got pretty far along, so just think positive and don't let yourself be intimidated by the tile wall!

I love the blog so far - your writing is eloquent and interesting. I'm sure that in no time you will catch up to the number of entries that I have written - considering you are nailing one almost each day!

Love you!

Wow, this is the second blogger I put on my favorites today. I wasn't bored so far, now there is even less of a chance for that. I have always told you, you should write a book. That would probably take even less effort than your flips. Love always, your Mom
